The Department of Life Sciences, organized a guest talk on career opportunities and applications in mass spectrometry by Dr Ajit Ganesh Datar, Advicer, Shimadzu Analytical India Pvt Ltd, Mumbai Feb 3, 2020. The event was held in the Room No 504, Block II, Main Campus, CHRIST (Deemed to Be University).  The talk was primarily based on the analytical techniques that are routinely used in the field of Life Sciences. Dr. Ajit Datar briefed us about the 5‘s’ of analytical techniques which are Sensitivity, Selectivity, Separation, Structure and Speed. He briefed the career opportunities in research and development in industry sectors. He also briefed the various opportunities that are available in quality check and pharmaceutical industries. He explained the audience about the Signal to Noise ratio that must be the fundamental while performing any technique wherein he focused on the applications of mass spectrometry in predicting the structure, molecular weight and retention time of the molecule. Lecture also explained about types of ionization depending upon the volatility of the sample. This in turn determines what technique to be used for analyzing the sample [Gas Chromatography (GC) or Liquid Chromatography LC)]. Combining two techniques is always a better option to gain better results. Speaker mentioned about ‘Quadrupole Mass Analyzer’ which involves ions being scanned by varying Direct Current (DC) and RF (Radio frequency) with the quadrupoles on either side of the set up. As a whole, the talk ended up with a small brain storming session where the students came up with their doubts and he effortlessly cleared them.
